Do NOT attempt to download KeePass from anywhere except the official KeePass page.

Paul,
Thanks, I thought I was using the official site. II tried again navigating from keypass.info and this time it worked at the third attempt. It upgraded me to version 2.something and I thought I had lost all my passwords, but I was able to import them,
Alan.

KeePass does not upgrade V1 to V2.
V1 and V2 are separate so you still have V1 installed.
You can uninstall V2 and update V1 if you wish.cheers, Paul

Paul,
The site definitely sent me version 2.56 when I tried to update version 1. I'm quite happy to use version 2,
Alan.

Clicking the bottom left green button will get you the 1.42 installer.cheers, Paul

Paul,
Thanks for the link, it's for the page I was using. I'm settled with version 2 now,
Alan.

As you ended up on a doubtful website (pcapp) I would suggest you check your machine for viruses / malware.
Assuming you have Windows, you can fire up Defender.
Press / click on the Windows flag.
Type "Defender" without the quotes.
Select the "Windows Security" app.
Select " Virus & threat protection" > "Quick scan".Then I would go to MalwareBytes, download the "For Home" free version and install and run it.
You do not need the real time protection option so you can ignore that bit.cheers, Paul

Paul,
Thanks for your advice. I am running Bitdefender and Windows Defender. I think I know what happened yesterday. I found my way to https://keepass.info/download.html where I saw four green rectangles that are download buttons, but I didn't recognise them as such. Instead I went to a green rectangle at the top right of the page in the same shade of green and labelled 'Download'. I expected it to introduce me to the download procedure for KeePass. In fact it took me to pcapp. I was completely fooled,
Alan.
