A Ryanair traveller has shared his simple hack to avoid having to check in a bag when travelling.
Ryanair is known for its cheap, budget flights that allows travellers on a smaller budgets get to enjoy a getaway to somewhere new. However these prices come at a cost, as travellers often find themselves having to pay more for additional services, including checking in a bag.
What's more, those who try to get around these fees can get stung at the gate. If you have brought a hand luggage bag that's too big for airlines' requirements, you may have to fork out more money.
So in an attempt to avoid these extra costs, one holidaymaker named Rob, who often makes videos on TikTok about the best travel hacks that won't break the bank, decided to see just how far he could go without having to pay extra for his luggage.
In a video published on April 5, Rob is seen strategically vacuum packing everything he wants to bring with him to Tenerife to make it fit into a smaller bag.
"POV: You vacuum packed all your suitcase to fit into a free Ryanair bag so you don't have to pay for hold luggage" he wrote on the video, showing his process of removing any excess air from his luggage.
As he went on, he put each of the vacuum sealed bags into the backpack that he was planning on bringing with him on the flight. He went on to weigh his bag after having packed it, and it came to 17.19kg - over seven kilos heavier than what's allowed for hand luggage for Ryanair.
Despite this, they decided to move on with the plan in the hopes that the staff wouldn't weigh their bags. He then filmed them getting through the airport without a hitch.
He let out a sigh of relief as he managed to get through and onto the plane with his hand luggage, saving him €55 that he would've had to pay at the gate, or €13 per extra kilo that the hand luggage is overweight, which would have resulted in €91 in total for the extra seven kilos.
"Yes the 4.5 hour Ryanair flight to Tenerife was just £15 but that is NOT the point," he wrote in the caption of the video.
People took to the comments to share their thoughts on Rob's hack – but some went on to ask what will happen when he travels back home.
"How are you getting all the stuff home?" one user asked, to which another viewer replied: "My vacuum bags come with a wee handpump, I thought it'd be a pain but it works no problem just as well!"
Another user also added that the vacuum bags can be sealed back up using a vacuum cleaner. But others said it's not worth the risk – as weighing the hand luggage could undo all that hard work.
